PMQs: Summary

The ‘Whole country this, the whole country that’ edition … …

Miliband rose to cheers of encouragement from his backbenchers (well, someone has to do it). He led with the phone hacking and Rebekah Brooks – time to resign. Hard for him to find a toe-hold today as all he’s doing is agree with what Cameron’s already said. ConsensusRUs.

Cameron said Murdoch has to stop thinking about mergers and concentrate on sorting out the hacking mess. Repeated that he would have accepted Brooks’ resignation. Lots of combined firepower directed against Murdoch and News Int’l but very few address the incestuous relationship between press and politicians – both dependent on each other. The real “victims” in all this, aren’t the likes of Gordon Brown; it’s those British people who believed press reports that were nothing more than government press releases.

Cameron went into some detail trying to clarify issues surrounding Andy Coulson. Labour b/benchers had a field day. ‘Guv, we woz all lied to.’ Miliband persisted and received a well-deserved slap-down from Cameron.

Speaker Bercow almost shouted himself hoarse; the Children’s Minister Tim Loughton once again came in for a Bercow spanking.
